Jumbo (supermarket)

Jumbo is a supermarket chain in the Netherlands. It is part of the privately owned Van Eerd Group. Van Eerd was originally a grocery wholesale company, established in 1921. In 1983, Van Eerd started the "Jumbo Supermarkten" supermarket chain. Within a short time there were dozens of Jumbos in the provinces of North Brabant, Zeeland and Limburg.

As of May 2006, 77 establishments have been opened throughout the Netherlands. Together they have a market share of 3.4% in the Netherlands as of 1 January 2006. Jumbo's marketing claims that the chain has "7 certainties" with which they, among others, claim to have the greatest choice for the lowest prices.

In December 2005, Jumbo hypermarket was chosen as the "best shop chain of the year" in the supermarkets category .

At present Jumbo is one of the fastest growing supermarkets in the Netherlands with a market share which regularly increases by 50% year-on-year.

The chain employs 10,000 people and there are, as of April 2006, a total of 53 branches and 24 franchisers.

The head office and distribution centre are situated in Veghel, (Noord Brabant). In October 2005 a Jumbo was also opened in Drenthe province, namely in Valthermond. With the opening of this store, there is now a Jumbo in every province in the Netherlands. Although Jumbo now has shops in the whole country there are relatively few Jumbos in the Randstad.
